Roughly five hundred years ago, there was a man who had discovered the continent which would come to be known as America. That man’s discovery became the catalyst of a great change that would forever impact the continent. Many had come from all over the globe to discover the possibilities of this great land for themselves. They brought with them ideas, hopes, dreams, different religions, traditions, customs, and much more.
The colonists who broke away from the ‘Mother Country’ (Europe) knew they were going to settle in America. They were certainly not the last. Today, there are more than three hundred million people living in the United States of America. Of those three hundred million people living in the United States of America, thirteen percent make up the foreign-born population (Britz, 2013). Immigration has been a great part of history since America’s discovery five hundred years ago.
Today immigration is seen as being negative in America. However, unless one’s personal history/background shows Native American lineage, than those persons have family members that are or at one time were immigrants themselves. Immigrants have traveled a great distance as have the people before them. They migrate to America for a variety of reasons; they come and experience some of the same hardships, and struggles. Some try to become part of the American people by abiding by the laws and regulations set in place to become Americans themselves. Immigrants have contributed a great deal, and have positively impacted America.
Everyone has a history; a personal background. This exhibit will provide information about immigrants, the process of immigration into America, and some of the laws and regulations set in place specifically for immigrants.
